KDP Account Setup and Royalty Models
KDP Account Setup and Royalty Models
Getting Started with Kindle Direct Publishing
Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is Amazon's self-publishing platform that allows authors to publish eBooks and paperbacks directly to readers worldwide. Setting up your KDP account is straightforward and completely free, making it an accessible entry point for first-time authors.
To begin, visit kdp.amazon.com and click "Sign Up." You'll need an active Amazon account; if you don't have one, you can create it during the KDP registration process. Amazon will ask for basic information including your name, email address, and preferred currency for royalty payments. You must provide accurate tax information to comply with legal requirements—this is crucial for receiving your earnings. U.S. authors need a Social Security Number or tax ID, while international authors provide equivalent documentation.
Understanding the Two Royalty Models
KDP offers two distinct royalty models that directly impact your earnings and book visibility. Understanding these options is essential before publishing.
35% Royalty Option
The 35% model applies when you price your eBook between $0.99 and $9.99. You receive 35% of the sale price as royalties. For example, if you sell an eBook for $4.99, you earn approximately $1.75. This option has minimal restrictions—you can distribute your book through other platforms simultaneously (Apple Books, Google Play, Draft2Digital, etc.). The 35% rate is lower, but the flexibility of non-exclusive distribution makes it suitable for authors wanting maximum market reach and multiple revenue streams.
70% Royalty Option
The 70% model offers significantly higher earnings: 70% of the sale price for eBooks priced between $2.99 and $9.99. Using the same $4.99 example, you'd earn $3.50—double the 35% model. However, this attractive rate comes with a critical requirement: you must enroll in KDP Select, Amazon's exclusive distribution program. KDP Select requires your eBook to be available only on Amazon for a 90-day renewable term. You cannot sell the same eBook on other platforms.
Choosing Your Model
Your decision depends on your goals. Choose 35% royalties if you want to maximize your distribution across multiple platforms and build a diversified author presence. Choose 70% royalties and KDP Select if you're willing to commit exclusively to Amazon and want to maximize per-unit earnings. Many new authors start with KDP Select to leverage Amazon's promotional tools and Kindle Unlimited access, then transition to wide distribution once they've established a reader base.
Account Settings and Payment
After choosing your royalty model, configure your Author Central profile. This allows you to claim your author page, add a biography, upload an author photo, and link your books. For payments, KDP deposits royalties monthly into your designated bank account or Amazon Payments account, typically around the 15th of each month for the previous month's sales.
Remember to verify your email address and keep your tax information current. These administrative details ensure smooth payments and account security as you build your publishing career.
